County Board not changing RV parking regulations
April 20th, 2010 Posted in News | Comments OffCounty Board Chairman Jay Fisette has passed along notice of a County Board decision of no-action regarding changing the regulations regarding RV parking on county streets. Please read below a letter he wrote to one citizen who helped initiate the fight against changing the regulation.
Dear Mr. Brown:
Thank you for taking the time to share your views on proposed Zoning Ordinance amendments pertaining to recreational vehicles with the County Board, the County Manager and staff. Over the past several months, County staff has explored a range of modifications to the zoning ordinance and County Code that would apply to this situation
After considering a number of options, and in recognition of the concerns expressed to date with each of the possible amendments, the County Manager has concluded that the current regulations are sufficient and that these amendments do not need to be brought forward at this time.
In light of this information and the cumulative views expressed by citizens, consideration of any Zoning Ordinance or County Code amendments which pertain to recreational vehicles will not be an agenda item before the Board in the foreseeable future.
Please be advised that the current regulations, as outlined below, will be in effect and enforced:
• RV’s parked on private property shall be less than 30 feet by 8 feet in size and shall be placed behind the front line of the dwelling.
• There is a five-day limit for RVs of less than 12,000 pounds gross vehicle weight (GVW) to park on a street where the abutting property is zoned for residential use,
• After five consecutive days, the vehicle must be moved to a new location, such as a different block
• RVs that exceed 12,000 pounds GVW cannot be parked on streets where the abutting property is zoned for residential use.
• RVs of any size will continue to be able to park on streets in areas zoned for commercial and industrial use, and S3-A (parks and schools).
I appreciate your interest in this matter and the time you took to share your concerns with us.
Sincerely,
Jay Fisette
Chairman

· Central gathering space, better walking & biking connections, improved Metro access planned
ARLINGTON, Va. – Learn the details of development plans around the East Falls Church Metrorail station at two upcoming community forums on the draft East Falls Church Area Plan. The draft plan calls for transforming the parking lots on either side with mixed-use development of the station and improving access.
The East Falls Church Planning Task Force, a citizen advisory group appointed by the County Board, is hosting the forums. The first forum will be held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Tuckahoe Elementary School, 6550 26th St N, Arlington on Thursday, April 29. The second forum will also be from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Tuckahoe Elementary School, on Tuesday, May 4.
Redeveloping near East Falls Church Metro station
The Task Force has spent three years reviewing ideas and concepts with County staff for redeveloping sites near the East Falls Church Metrorail station, including the Park & Ride and Kiss & Ride parcels. The Task Force also has examined current traffic patterns and possible future transportation impacts, based on potential development anticipated in the plan.

Arlington, Va., is a world-class residential, business and tourist location that was originally part of the “10 miles square” parcel of land surveyed in 1791 to be the Nation’s Capital. It is the geographically smallest self-governing county in the United States, occupying slightly less than 26 square miles. Arlington maintains a rich variety of stable neighborhoods, quality schools and enlightened land use, and received the Environmental Protection Agency’s highest award for “Smart Growth” in 2002. Home to some of the most influential organizations in the world – including the Pentagon – Arlington stands out as one of America’s preeminent places to live, visit and do business.

WETA tower license renewal vote – May 10
April 15th, 2010 Posted in News | 3 Comments »The five year period for the ”use permit” for the WETA radio tower located between 19th Road and 22nd St at the base of Big Walnut Park is coming to a close soon, and WETA is applying to have its permit renewed for another five years. This means that WETA will be applying to the County for permission to continue to host the tower for purposes of broadcast of WETA radio programming. But WETA gets revenue from its tower as well – it rents space on the tower to other companies interested in its prime location but uninterested in erecting (or unable to afford) a tower of their own. For example, one type of business interested in using the WETA tower is cell phone companies.
WETA has been kind enough to solicit community feedback and support in its attempt to have its permit renewed, and has attended two Civic Association Board meetings this year to present its case in person. While it is very likely that the county will renew the permit, that does not mean that TLH should not make its views known about the tower. Consequently, the Civic Association Board solicits resident input on the renewal of WETA’s permit. During the May 10 TLH community meeting, which is open to all residents, we will present a summary of resident opinions expressed and vote on a position the community as a whole can advance to the County Board (which is the organization that will hear the case to renew the use permit).
Please send all thoughts to comments@taraleeway.org.
Note that with this use permit renewal, WETA is arguing that it not be restricted in the number of antennae it can host on the tower, but by the total amount of energy the tower emits. For your information, I have attached several pictures of the types of antennae likely to be used by companies who rent tower space from WETA (informaton about another antenna can be found at http://www.kathrein-scala.com/catalog/739620.pdf). Also notable is the fact that as technology advances, these antennae will only get smaller in size at the same time that they become more efficient (i.e. emit less energy).
I look forward to reading your electronic comments and to seeing you on May 10 for the annual meeting. The meeting will begin at 7 pm and will be held at the Westover Library, at 1644 N. McKinley Street, in the large conference room (“Westover Room”).
Thank you very much and best regards,
Dave Shepherd
