Bagged Leaf Collection extended until January 18
January 10th, 2008 Posted in NewsArlington County will extend bagged leaf collection until January 18th in response to this season’s unusually late leaf fall. Each neighborhood will receive an additional weekend to rake leaves and one more bagged leaf collection from the seven (7) day extension. We apologize for any inconvenience that the unanticipated late leaf fall may have caused you. To ensure your leaves are collected and recycled, please place your paper leaf bags at the curb prior to 7:00 a.m. on the business day after your normal trash day. Check the table below for the date of your last leaf bag collection.
Trash Day Last (Leaf Bag Collection)
- Friday (Monday, January 14)
- Monday (Tuesday, January 15)
- Tuesday (Wednesday, January 16)
- Wednesday (Thursday, January 17)
- Thursday (Friday, January 18)
A limited number of FREE bags are still available at the Solid Waste Bureau near Shirlington, 4300 29th Street, South, from Monday – Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Paper leaf bags are also available at local retail stores.
Each year Arlington plans extensively for leaf collection efforts. In late summer, Arlington begins planning for annual leaf collection by consulting various experts about the expected leaf fall, recruiting and hiring as many as 40 temporary workers, and planning a collection schedule to best meet the needs of all residents. Despite expert predictions based on this year’s drought conditions, rain, winds, and temperature, this season was an anomaly, with leaves falling in Arlington later than anticipated.
Unfortunately, due to the beginning of our Christmas tree recycling effort on January 7th, we cannot extend the vacuum collection service as many residents have requested. All Arlington neighborhoods have received two vacuum passes to collect leaves for recycling, completing the Leaf Vacuum Program for this season.
During leaf season – and this year as well – we announce updates to the vacuum leaf schedule twice a week as changes occur based on weather and rate of leaf fall. Residents can reliably find the latest vacuum schedule by:
- Looking for bright yellow neighborhood signs with leaf collection dates.
- Checking online at http://www.arlingtonva.us/recycle
- Signing up to receive schedule updates by e-mail
- Calling (703) 228-6565 for recorded schedule by civic association, ex. Barcroft
- Watching COMCAST Cable 74 or Verizon Channel 40.
We appreciate your efforts to recycle leaves through both Arlington’s vacuum and bagged leaf collection programs. Thank you for keeping thousands of tons of organic matter out of Arlington’s waste stream. If you have further questions about Arlington County’s leaf collection program, please call the customer service line at (703) 228-6570.
